Arab Literature in A Global Context
Limited Capacity seats available

There is no better way to understand Arab history and culture than the medium of literature. Literature is a reflection of every aspect of life, and it allows us to look at people through a human lens rather than focusing on their ethnic differences.
The audience for our presentation would be secondary teachers because it is at this level where students are being prepared to enter a world where reality and perception are not necessarily the same especially with regards to being Arab.
Through our presentation we aspire to create global awareness and make Arab literature accessible to everyone.
After all, we all have a story to tell.

Empowering your Learners
Limited Capacity seats available

Power in the classroom has traditionally rested in the hands of the teacher, with learners being told what to do and when. In today’s world such an approach fails to adequately equip our learners for life outside the classroom and, ultimately, in the work place. Gone are the days when teachers are the source of all knowledge. Learners now need to become independent and ‘learn how to learn’. But what needs to change in the classroom? What roles do learners and teachers ‘play’? How do you help young children become independent learners and take responsibility for their learning? How do you continue to develop these skills? By the end of this session, participants will be able to answer all of these questions (and more). Have a set of activities, tools and strategies to turn their classrooms into learning-centred places and change the dynamic by empowering their learners.

Leading Innovative Practice
Limited Capacity seats available

'If we continue to do things the way we do them, we will produce the same outcomes'. In times of educational reform, particularly in the middle east, IB educators are at the forefront of innovation in education. For too long, educators around the world are driven by linear and two-dimensional approaches to teaching and learning. Leading innovative practice requires a culture of careful risk-taking embedded in the school culture. It starts with the leadership team of IB schools. How do we develop a broad and universal concept of innovation to bring about change in IB schools in the Middle East? This inspiring and thought-provoking session explores the extent to which innovation in IB schools in the middle east can lead to sustained improvement in IB schools.

Service-based Pedagogies and Relationships of Power in the Middle East

But what does this actually look like in Jordan? In this session we will discuss the framework of post-critical service learning (Bruce 2011), which focuses on relationships of power and privilege within service. We will offer a contextualized and culturally-relevant way to design community and service learning in the Middle East.
